Anne-Marie drops a new album dubbed Therapy.

“It’s pop, but it’s very honest, like always,” Anne-Marie tells Apple Music of her second studio album. “I feel like I just try and tell the truth, and touch on the subjects. The real, you know?” The Essex native’s slow and steady emergence in UK pop—progressing through her twenties from guest vocalist for hire to legit charismatic star with 2018’s debut album Speak Your Mind—has been underpinned as much by her candour as it has by her irresistible hooks.

Therapy is true to her values. “It’s called Therapy because I’ve been going to see a real therapist and it’s changed my life,” she says. “I’ve been writing along that journey. I’m never nervous about [being honest], because I feel like the music I get drawn to, especially growing up, was always so personal. A lot of Alanis Morissette, Eminem and Lauryn Hill—people who were just putting their heart on the line.”

There’s plenty of heart-on-the-line/sleeve pop here—not least her duet with One Direction alum Niall Horan, “Our Song”. “I was on my way to the studio to meet Niall when I just thought, ‘Imagine if you had that one song with your ex, and then you split up and now you have to hear that song and you hate it.’ I arrived at the studio and explained the idea and Niall picked up his guitar and started playing.
